Kristian Lempa is an international development leader specializing in responsible resource governance, democratic institutions, and sustainable infrastructure, with a strong focus on Africa’s mining sector. As Director of the Division for Global Policy, Governance and Cities at GIZ, he advises governments and regional partners on how to translate political commitments on raw materials into concrete regulatory reforms and investment frameworks.Drawing on a background in political science, Kristian works at the interface of mining policy, public finance, and institutional reform. His work emphasizes transparency along mineral value chains, resilience of critical raw material supply, and benefit-sharing models that strengthen local economies and social cohesion.
Kristian is particularly interested in how digital tools and innovative finance can close governance gaps in the extractive sector, from licensing and traceability to revenue management. In international forums, he brings together policymakers, companies, and civil society to co-design practical approaches that align mining investments with climate goals, just transition, and long-term stability in African partner countries.
