Deprose Muchena is an international development, social justice and human rights practitioner and leader. With passion for working at the intersection of human rights, natural resources and development, drawing on people’s agency to bring change on the ground, he brings over 20 years practice experience across national, regional and global geographies. In July 2025, he assumed the role of Director of the Resources Futures in Africa, a new initiative at the Open Society Foundations. In this role he leads the Foundation’s critical minerals program, working with partners to ensure that Africa’s critical minerals benefit its people, not just markets and that
critical mineral extraction is aligned with sustainable development goals, promote responsible sourcing and
investment. For the past decade he held multiple roles at the global human rights watch dog, Amnesty International, including as Regional Director for East and Southern Africa and Senior Director for
Human rights Impact. In the later role he provided leadership of Amnesty’s global regional operations located in eight global centers to drive human rights change and impact on the ground.
