Dan Marokane is currently the Group Chief Executive (GCE) of Eskom Holdings SOC Limited, a 100% state-owned company of over 40 000 employees, generating close to 90% of the energy supplied to a wide range of customers in South Africa and the region. Appointed as the Eskom GCE in March 2024, Dan is appointed to lead and advance the turnaround strategy focusing on operational and financial performance, as well as the structural reform agenda.

He previously served in other senior executive roles at Eskom from 2010 to 2015, including leadership of Group Technology, Group Commercial and Group Capital. During his tenure, he contributed to stabilising coal-supply operations, strengthening procurement governance and transformation, and advancing key capital projects, including the Medupi Power Station Project.

Dan then became an energy and infrastructure advisor, provided expert advisory services across mega projects in the energy and infrastructure value chain, including strategy formulation, execution & risk management, asset optimisation and acquisition and capital raising

Before rejoining Eskom in 2024, Dan was initially a member of the executive team to lead the turnaround and recapitalization of Tongaat-Hulett, the 130-year-old sugar company operating across four sub-Saharan countries, following the discovery of significant accounting irregularities. He was subsequently appointed to the role of Chief Business Transformation Officer and then Interim Chief Executive Officer, to complete the recapitalisation of the company, while ensuring the groups’ operational entities continued to demonstrate financial improvement.

Dan served as Vice President of Operations at the Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA), overseeing oil and gas production and contributing significantly to energy sector operations, before joining Eskom in 2010.

Dan is a seasoned turnaround expert, a charismatic and inspirational leader, with a proven track record of almost 30 years of disciplined execution in operational, strategic and change leadership roles in large organisations. He has led operations across the oil, gas, power and manufacturing sectors where he has overseen procurement budgets of over R100 billion and capex budgets of R60 billion annually.

Dan holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering and an MBA from the University of Cape Town and an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London. He is passionate about people, helping them realise their inherent value and full potential, which is critical to driving performance.
