Bernadette Vivuya is an Award-winning Congolese journalist and filmmaker from Goma, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. She works on issues related to human rights, the environment and the exploitation of natural resources, with a particular interest in topics that highlight the resilience of the people in her region. Aware that the global narrative of the DRC is still marked by clichés inherited from the colonial gaze, she strives to deconstruct the stereotypical representations of the country, and more broadly of Africa. She campaigns for a more accurate, nuanced narrative rooted in the realities experienced by local communities. Her approach aims to put Congolese people back at the centre of their own narrative, valuing their voices, perspectives, traditions and cultural references. She is a member of Collectif Cobalt, a collective that uses art to address global issues and build shared and inclusive imaginaries by stimulating individual and collective reflection and action.
